In the Summer of 2005 with a spectacular Ashes series well under way and the sounds of .... the Pussycat Dolls 'Don't cha'.... ringing in our ears, we were designing for Sterling Insurance Group for their move to a new Headquarters building in Kings Hill, West Malling, Kent.

 

The 55,000 square foot project with over 400 staff saw the coming together of four offices under one roof and the creation of one culture from which the business could deliver its aggressive growth targets.

The forward thinking client had always understood the maxim - Quality Endures


 

Back in 2005 discussions took place regarding the procurement strategy for this project and the desire to 'buy quality at the best price' was very much the strategy taken.

 

A decade later...

Disappeared swift as a hand blown kiss by the way, we returned to Kings Hill to review the floor plans and the findings in relation to the longevity of the office design and office fit out performance were positive to say the least.

 

Given that many of the products and materials used on this project were at least 10 years old, the environment feels as fresh and vibrant as Day One... Testimony to the right product selection and a client who takes pride in and care of their working environment.

The palm treed boulevard that was created is as stunning as ever with the only real difference being that the Palm Trees are now considerably taller.

 

The Restaurant - a highly successful hub for the business contains exactly the same furniture and layout as it did 10 years ago and yet is showing no signs of being tired or no longer functioning. It remains the place of choice to meet and chat and capture the incidental interactions that improve businesses.

Big success stories include the inherited Clestra Hauserman partitioning system.

The relocatable partitioning system was left in situ by a former tenant and it was decided to re-use for its flexibility - this proved an excellent decision with partitions being used again and again around the building to support a dynamic business. The partitioning system is a minimum of 15 years old and still performing superbly at minimum cost of reconfiguration.

Turning to the flooring, an Interface tile was used and has unquestionably stood the test of time.

Much discussion took place at the time of procurement regarding the level of quality tile to obtain. Once again, the decision was a good one as the life of the tile in a busy office environment has been excellent.

 

With regard to furniture, the Herman Miller Desking, Orangebox task seating and Ki storage have all delivered on their warranty promises and have much life left in them.

 

 

So 'Buy Well, Buy Once' works and needs to be combined with a further key message:

'Design for the lease duration and not for a short term makeover'

This will provide the double win of extended staff engagement and longevity of product performance.
